I arrived at the decision to self-publish only after much deliberation about what to do next. You see, I had no plan and no idea how to publish or market that which I’d spent months writing. My single goal was to finish the book. But my WORD document didn’t look like a book; it didn’t have a cover with pages in between.
I turned to the internet and by a sheer click of luck I found a writers meeting in my city and the featured speaker was from Lightning Source, a POD company for self-publishing.
I am so grateful I was led to that meeting. The speaker held up a paperback book and announced he had a plan for authors. I was an author and I needed a plan, so I quickly raised my hand.
The speaker responded to my waving arm, “I promise I’ll take questions at the end.”
I pulled my arm down and begin to write every word he spoke. I took notes in scribble format without regard to legibility. All I cared about was the speaker had a plan; I needed one, and his included publishing.
My Dream Come True…
My dream was about to become a reality, my book, with a cover and pages in between, was within reach.
The smartest thing I did, besides going to the meeting, was to speak with the speaker. Luck smiled on me again, he was a vice president and just happened to be filling in for someone who couldn’t make the meeting. I got his business card and reassurance of help. I phoned him two days later.
I went to the meeting with manuscript in hand. I left with the name of an editor, a designer, and best of all, the final piece of the publishing puzzle, Lightning Source.
I’m glad I was led to self-publish. I believe it is absolutely the best route for new authors to take. I am in the process of writing my steps to self-publishing with Lightning Source and I will make it available through my web site.
Holding my book, with a cover and pages in between remains one of my proudest moments. My wish for every new author is to experience the same joy.
